I must con\u00adfess: I don\u2019t, not espe\u00adcial\u00adly.&nbsp; Sure it\u2019s fun to watch the year\u00adly fash\u00adion show, and see the lights and glit\u00adter and lip-sync\u00ading played out\u2026 and we chuck\u00adle at all the win\u00adners\u2019 bab\u00adble, and then laugh at the com\u00admen\u00adtary about the bab\u00adble, and then at the com\u00admen\u00adtary about all the com\u00admen\u00adtary!&nbsp; But, when it comes down to it, frankly, most of the time I\u2019m left with the feel\u00ading of <em>where\u2019s the music<\/em>?&nbsp; Where\u2019s the <em>real<\/em> music?<br>\n<!--more--><br>\nYou know, the stuff that reeks won\u00adder\u00adful\u00adly of sin\u00adcer\u00adi\u00adty, and toil?&nbsp; The stuff that lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly changes your life when you hear it\u2026 where\u2019s <em>that<\/em>?&nbsp; Where\u2019s the music that catch\u00ades your breath and makes your hair stand on end, and you know in an instant that if you heard that music again many years lat\u00ader it would be just as mov\u00ading and thrilling and awe-inspir\u00ading if not more so.&nbsp; Where is <em>that<\/em>, the <em>real<\/em> music, the <em>PASSION<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>So, for this year\u2019s Grammy\u2019s, I decid\u00aded to cast only a half-heart\u00aded eye and ear in the direc\u00adtion of Hol\u00adly\u00adwood.&nbsp; Save some time, right?&nbsp; Wrong!&nbsp; Shock\u00ader of shock\u00aders: out of the ampli\u00adfied din of plat\u00adform shoes and cleav\u00adage and crazi\u00adness, there comes a name that I inti\u00admate\u00adly rec\u00adog\u00adnized, a name on the win\u00adners\u2019 list that grabbed my atten\u00adtion and made me sit up straight\u2013Mahler.&nbsp; Mahler?!&nbsp; Com\u00adpos\u00ader Gus\u00adtav Mahler, who passed away in 1911?!&nbsp; Yikes, yes!!!&nbsp; Here in the win\u00adners\u2019 cir\u00adcle, his soul was unmis\u00adtak\u00aden\u00adly present: his music was shin\u00ading in the spot\u00adlights, gloriously\u2013and not once, not twice, but <em>three<\/em> times:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>BEST CLASSICAL ALBUM\u2013Gustav Mahler: Sym\u00adpho\u00adny No. 8 and the Ada\u00adgio from Sym\u00adpho\u00adny No. 10, with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Fran\u00adcis\u00adco Sym\u00adpho\u00adny<\/li>\n<li>BEST CHORAL PERFORMANCE\u2013Gustav Mahler: Sym\u00adpho\u00adny No. 8 and the Ada\u00adgio from Sym\u00adpho\u00adny No. 10, with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Fran\u00adcis\u00adco Sym\u00adpho\u00adny<\/li>\n<li>BEST ENGINEERED CLASSICAL ALBUM\u2013Gustav Mahler: Sym\u00adpho\u00adny No. 8 and the Ada\u00adgio from Sym\u00adpho\u00adny No. 10, with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Fran\u00adcis\u00adco Sym\u00adpho\u00adny<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adly, I have to say, \u201cHot damn, this rocks!\u201d&nbsp; For Mahler\u2019s 8th is incred\u00adi\u00adble.&nbsp; It is undoubt\u00aded\u00adly one of the most dif\u00adfi\u00adcult sym\u00adphonies of all time to pull off, par\u00adtial\u00adly because of the sheer size of the under\u00adtak\u00ading and because of all the com\u00adpo\u00adnents involved: a huge orches\u00adtra, large cho\u00adrus, mul\u00adti\u00adple soloists, organ, children\u2019s cho\u00adrus\u00ades\u2026 hun\u00addreds, let me just say that again, <em>hun\u00addreds<\/em> of musi\u00adcians are involved!&nbsp; No won\u00adder it became known in Mahler\u2019s time as his \u201cSym\u00adpho\u00adny of a Thou\u00adsand\u201d\u2013 a uni\u00adverse of bod\u00adies is required!&nbsp; And per\u00adformed today, it is just as vast and com\u00adpli\u00adcat\u00aded and mind\u00adbog\u00adgling.<\/p>\n<p>But what is even more amaz\u00ading about Mahler\u2019s 8th is that, in spite of the epic-ness of it all, the music is alarm\u00ading\u00adly trans\u00adpar\u00adent.&nbsp; Dan\u00adger\u00adous\u00adly trans\u00adpar\u00adent.&nbsp; For Mahler was fanat\u00adi\u00adcal in his orches\u00adtra\u00adtion and scor\u00ading: he craft\u00aded every sin\u00adgle voice and lone instru\u00admen\u00adtal line with such absolute per\u00adfec\u00adtion, that each is <em>fright\u00aden\u00ading\u00adly<\/em> exposed <em>exact\u00adly as he intend\u00aded<\/em>.&nbsp; And what does this mean?&nbsp; No lip-sync\u00ading soloists found here!&nbsp; No shrink\u00ading vio\u00adlets any\u00adwhere on a Mahler-sym\u00adpho\u00adny stage!&nbsp; No, here the musi\u00adcians are real and true, and brave\u2013they have to be!&nbsp; They stand in a sea of human\u00adi\u00adty upon that stage, strong with years of edu\u00adca\u00adtion, sweat and toil in their blood; yet each per\u00adson is indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly called upon to pre\u00advail like a soli\u00adtary and hum\u00adble hero, tak\u00ading a giant leap into the sky when\u00adev\u00ader Mahler asks it of them.<\/p>\n<p>Well\u2026 leap they do, <em>all<\/em> of them do, here in this three-Gram\u00admy-award-win\u00adning record\u00ading of Mahler\u2019s 8th Sym\u00adpho\u00adny!&nbsp; Con\u00adduc\u00adtor Michael Tilson Thomas, the San Fran\u00adcis\u00adco Sym\u00adpho\u00adny, the Pacif\u00adic Boys Choir, the San Fran\u00adcis\u00adco Sym\u00adpho\u00adny Cho\u00adrus, the San Fran\u00adcis\u00adco Girls Cho\u00adrus, the soloists, the engi\u00adneers\u2013<em>all<\/em> of them make a quan\u00adtum leap in this amaz\u00ading record\u00ading.&nbsp; Indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly and togeth\u00ader they soar, always gen\u00aduine\u00adly, through\u00adout this entire enor\u00admous work.&nbsp; And the results of this, for you and me?&nbsp; Mag\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcence!&nbsp; Bril\u00adliance!&nbsp; And tears.&nbsp; Mag\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcence that is almost over\u00adwhelm\u00ading!&nbsp; Bril\u00adliance that can scarce\u00adly be described!&nbsp; And tears, tears that glis\u00adten with life\u2019s full spec\u00adtrum of col\u00adors\u2026 tears of joy, because Mahler always shows us the soul of human\u00adi\u00adty.<\/p>\n<p>With Mahler, it is always all about the MUSIC.&nbsp;
