Born from hum\u00adble roots in Kar\u00adnal, India, Kalpana Chawla trav\u00adeled one of the longest and hard\u00adest roads to become an Amer\u00adi\u00adcan astro\u00adnaut.  Though small in stature, she became huge\u00adly known the world over as \u201cKalpana\u201d or \u201cK.C.\u201d, the Indi\u00adan girl who against all odds want\u00aded to become an aero\u00adspace engi\u00adneer, the Indi\u00adan girl who want\u00aded to fly and explore and who per\u00adse\u00advered to make it hap\u00adpen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Her name became known in almost every Indi\u00adan house\u00adhold, an inspi\u00adra\u00adtion to both men and women alike; and in Amer\u00adi\u00adca, her name became syn\u00adony\u00admous with her dili\u00adgence and intel\u00adli\u00adgence, as well as with the ener\u00adgy that shown forth from her smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But her name had an even greater mean\u00ading, espe\u00adcial\u00adly to her STS-107 astro\u00adnaut col\u00adleagues.  For, remark\u00adably, the San\u00adskrit word \u201ckalpana\u201d means \u201cimag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion,\u201d or \u201ca dream,\u201d or \u201csome\u00adthing that is almost impos\u00adsi\u00adble to reach.\u201d  In this respect, her name applied to each of them!  For the STS-107 crew, this Colum\u00adbia mis\u00adsion into space was a great imag\u00adin\u00ading, a great dream, a great \u201ckalpana\u201d that had tak\u00aden most of their lives to reach.  Each of the sev\u00aden astro\u00adnauts had strived hard for so long, indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly at first, then togeth\u00ader for years as a team, and final\u00adly they were soar\u00ading to the stars, final\u00adly they were work\u00ading in space!  For each of them, it was the high\u00adest point of their lives, the big dream come true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, although a trib\u00adute to them all and espe\u00adcial\u00adly to Kalpana Chawla, this music rep\u00adre\u00adsents \u201ckalpana,\u201d the great dream they each had and shared.  Lis\u00adten close\u00adly, try to hear it; try to see it clear\u00adly, glow\u00ading in their faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
