It\u2019s been a year,
or two, or more it seems,
and you\u2019re miss\u00ading them,
again\u2026
those heroes in your life
who are now gone from your life\u2026
miss\u00ading them, again,
espe\u00adcial\u00adly one,
one who shined so bright\u00adly,
one who was so very close<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

And tonight is dif\u00adfer\u00adent
from all the oth\u00ader aching nights:
though the tears are long gone,
the pain is unbear\u00adable,
far beyond what you thought
it could ever be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You rush out\u00adside
into the black\u00adness of the win\u00adter night,
des\u00adper\u00adate for a breath of fresh air.
And, final\u00adly, you look up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy gosh, the stars!  Look at all the stars!\u201d
At that moment there is only you and the stars
and the cold
and the utter still\u00adness of the sil\u00adhou\u00adet\u00adted trees
as if they too can\u00adnot believe the sight.
\u201cThe stars!\u201d you breathe\u2026
there must be
thou\u00adsands of them tonight,
thou\u00adsands of dia\u00admonds fill\u00ading the sky,
bril\u00adliant, radi\u00adant,
shin\u00ading wher\u00adev\u00ader you look,
shin\u00ading so bright\u00adly!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But,
isn\u2019t it odd, you think,
and now that I think of it, how fun\u00adny, how strange!
All of our lives, since we were lit\u00adtle,
when\u00adev\u00ader we have gone out\u00adside into the night,
if it was clear enough
we could always see the stars.
Always.
Now, years lat\u00ader, there they are, still there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same stars,
bril\u00adliant, radi\u00adant,
still shin\u00ading wher\u00adev\u00ader we look,
shin\u00ading so bright\u00adly!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My breath is caught by this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sud\u00adden\u00adly
there is not much dif\u00adfer\u00adence
between the stars in the sky
and the heroes of my life.

Doubts creep in out of nowhere, so habit\u00adu\u00adal;
it is so easy to feel cold and alone again\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stars, the stars, look at all the stars!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I pick out a star from over\u00adhead, I choose a bright one as mine\u2026
and I think of my hero in my aching heart.\u2026
and I think very slow\u00adly<\/p>\n\n\n\n

can I touch my star now?
no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

can I hear my star speak?
no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

but is my star still influ\u00adenc\u00ading me
every day of my life,
still pro\u00adfound\u00adly affect\u00ading me
in my every wak\u00ading hour?
isn\u2019t my star still giv\u00ading me
count\u00adless thoughts and mem\u00ado\u00adries and inspi\u00adra\u00adtion,
still chal\u00adleng\u00ading me to turn my ordi\u00adnary life
into some\u00adthing more tran\u00adscen\u00addent?
aren\u2019t the stars in the sky and the heroes in our minds
still tru\u00adly shin\u00ading for us,
bril\u00adliant\u00adly, radi\u00adant\u00adly,
still shin\u00ading wher\u00adev\u00ader we look, year after year,
shin\u00ading just as bright\u00adly as ever?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
