I did\u00adn\u2019t know them.  I didn\u2019t know their names, or that they had been in space for six\u00adteen days, or that they were called the \u201cSTS-107\u201d crew, or even what \u201cSTS\u201d meant.  But I was sit\u00adting next to my piano on the morn\u00ading of Feb\u00adru\u00adary 1st, 2003 when I heard the news\u2026 the awful news that the space shut\u00adtle Colum\u00adbia had just bro\u00adken apart upon reen\u00adtry, 200,000 feet high in the skies over Texas, and that the entire crew had undoubt\u00aded\u00adly per\u00adished.  It was unfath\u00adomable.  I hadn\u2019t known them, that crew of sev\u00aden, but my heart was sud\u00adden\u00adly sear\u00ading with pain for their fam\u00adi\u00adlies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

In the days and months that fol\u00adlowed, I was rarely far from the piano, I couldn\u2019t leave the piano.  This music just poured out like a flood; it poured out of nowhere, for the Colum\u00adbia space shut\u00adtle and all who had loved her, for the astro\u00adnauts and for their fam\u00adi\u00adlies.  And very slow\u00adly I began to dis\u00adcov\u00ader who these sev\u00aden astro\u00adnauts had been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It didn\u2019t take long to find out their names and their amaz\u00ading accom\u00adplish\u00adments.  What was sur\u00adpris\u00ading to me was to find out that they had been \u201castro\u00adnauts\u201d in the truest sense\u2013 not peo\u00adple who were born as heroes from the start, but peo\u00adple who instead had been ordi\u00adnary human beings with incred\u00adi\u00adble atti\u00adtude, extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnary atti\u00adtude\u2026 human beings that had been innate\u00adly curi\u00adous to explore the uni\u00adverse, human beings that had had unwa\u00adver\u00ading deter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion and per\u00adse\u00adver\u00adance in every\u00adthing they had under\u00adtak\u00aden, that had refused to give up on their dreams, human beings who had worked relent\u00adless\u00adly for most of their lives to learn what\u00adev\u00ader was nec\u00ades\u00adsary to serve human\u00adi\u00adty in space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And serve us they did, doing more than 80 micro\u00adgrav\u00adi\u00adty exper\u00adi\u00adments, exper\u00adi\u00adments that could only be done in space and that might poten\u00adtial\u00adly ben\u00ade\u00adfit the lives of every per\u00adson on the plan\u00adet.  I didn\u2019t know the STS-107 crew, and I\u2019m sure they didn\u2019t know my name, but they flew for me any\u00adway.  They flew for all of us, to make our lives bet\u00adter.  And that means they flew for you too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every\u00adone gets to fly.  Only a lim\u00adit\u00aded num\u00adber of astro\u00adnauts have ever flown in space, and yet thou\u00adsands of noble peo\u00adple have worked their lives behind the scenes to help to get them there\u2026 engi\u00adneers, sci\u00aden\u00adtists, con\u00adtrac\u00adtors, tech\u00adni\u00adcians, mis\u00adsion con\u00adtrol spe\u00adcial\u00adists, sup\u00adport per\u00adson\u00adnel, sec\u00adre\u00adtaries\u2026 and that huge pyra\u00admid of sup\u00adport peo\u00adple does not stop there.  The pyra\u00admid extends to us, it includes you and me, because with\u00adout our sup\u00adport and our inter\u00adest our astro\u00adnauts can\u00adnot fly.  With\u00adout us, the dreams of space\u00adflight and explo\u00adration die, our tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy with\u00aders, and the qual\u00adi\u00adty of our lives stag\u00adnates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So here we are in this huge pyra\u00admid of peo\u00adple who are respon\u00adsi\u00adble for help\u00ading our astro\u00adnauts to get into space, and they know it.  Every time our astro\u00adnauts risk their lives and climb atop a live rock\u00adet, they are acute\u00adly aware that they rep\u00adre\u00adsent us, that they are fly\u00ading for us, and they feel that hon\u00ador and risk and pres\u00adsure.  They are our fin\u00adger\u00adtips, reach\u00ading out to touch the unknowns of the stars, reach\u00ading out to make our lives bet\u00adter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They dare to dream, but so do we through them.  We dare to dream.  If you have any doubts of that, just watch a video of any space shut\u00adtle launch and see if you can keep your heart from leap\u00ading, see if you can keep your mouth from say\u00ading, \u201cOh gosh, wow.\u2026.\u201d.  Yes, we dare to dream; it is a part of who we are as human beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we dare to dream, some\u00adtimes we fall.  And fall we did, ter\u00adri\u00adbly, on that Feb\u00adru\u00adary morn\u00ading of 2003.  But does that mean that we should stop and nev\u00ader pick our\u00adselves up, nev\u00ader learn and nev\u00ader dare to dream again?  That would be the most hor\u00adrif\u00adic of all tragedies: for us to give up on Colum\u00adbia, for us to for\u00adget them, our fin\u00adger\u00adtips.  True heroes do not for\u00adget those with extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnary atti\u00adtude.  True heroes nev\u00ader give up, even in the low\u00adest of times.  And true heroes nev\u00ader hes\u00adi\u00adtate for too long after falling down, but instead climb to their feet with even greater knowl\u00adedge and pur\u00adpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We owe it to Colum\u00adbia and to our\u00adselves to con\u00adtin\u00adue their mis\u00adsion, our mis\u00adsion, of sci\u00adence and explo\u00adration of the heav\u00adens.  For it is in this type of reach\u00ading and explo\u00adration that you and I can become more than we thought we could ever be as human beings; through this we can also become \u201castro\u00adnauts\u201d in the truest sense: ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded, unselfish explor\u00aders with extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnary atti\u00adtude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To the Colum\u00adbia STS-107 crew, to their fam\u00adi\u00adlies, and to all who helped build, main\u00adtain, and fly the world\u2019s first reusable mag\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcent space\u00adship: this music is for you.  It is for all of us who dare to dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
