I was pret\u00adty young at the time, in ele\u00admen\u00adtary school.  And I remem\u00adber we had these week\u00adly vocab\u00adu\u00adlary tests\u2026ugh, not my favorite thing.  The teacher would give us a new list of words each week, and we had to learn the spelling of each word as well as the def\u00adi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The most uncom\u00adfort\u00adable thing about the tests, by far, was that we \ncouldn\u2019t resort to just regur\u00adgi\u00adtat\u00ading the def\u00adi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion of each word and be\n done with it.  (No way, life had to be hard\u00ader than that\u2026 even in \nele\u00admen\u00adtary school!)  As it was, we had to have thought about each word A\n LOT, enough to know its essence, enough to use it in con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion in \nfront of the class.  We had to have a deep, gut feel\u00ading for each word:  \nin short, we had to real\u00adly know<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So this one night I was at home, cram\u00adming for the test the next day.  And I kept get\u00adting bogged down with the word \u201cintegri\u00adty.\u201d  I could spell it.  And I could blankly rat\u00adtle off the def\u00adi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion by mem\u00ado\u00adry.  But every time I reliv\u00aded my teacher\u2019s help\u00adful advice, to \u201cthink of the \u2018soul\u2019 of it, think of what it real\u00adly means,\u201d the word just made me feel like a stu\u00adpid idiot, a very young stu\u00adpid idiot.  I just couldn\u2019t wrap my mind around it, or get inside of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I went into the liv\u00ading room where my dear (pro\u00adfes\u00adsor-sci\u00aden\u00adtist) dad was sit\u00adting in his big red chair, intent\u00adly watch\u00ading the CBS Evening News on TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDad, what\u2019s \u2018integri\u00adty\u2019 mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said, \u201cAren\u2019t you sup\u00adposed to know that one already?\u201d, or some\u00adthing to that effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d I respond\u00aded, \u201cbut I still don\u2019t get it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was met with silence, except for the sound of the news in the back\u00adground.\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So then I said, \u201cOkay, well can you give me an exam\u00adple of it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My ques\u00adtion was again met with silence\u2026 all except for the very-famil\u00adiar voice of the news anchor\u00adman in the back\u00adground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was des\u00adper\u00adate: \u201cDAD, I don\u2019t know what \u2018integri\u00adty\u2019 is!!  The test is tomor\u00adrow and I still don\u2019t know, I still don\u2019t get it!  So what do I think about?  Dad, what I should think of???\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll nev\u00ader for\u00adget what hap\u00adpened next.  He paused (still star\u00ading at the TV), and a flood of warmth sud\u00adden\u00adly washed over his face\u2026 and then he slow\u00adly, very thought\u00adful\u00adly said, \u201cThink of.\u2026.\u2026.\u2026.\u2026 Wal\u00adter.. Cronkite.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bam!  What an answer!  I didn\u2019t expect that at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wal\u00adter Cronkite!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt myself relax, and smile.  Wal\u00adter Cronkite\u2026 whose friend\u00adly face graced our din\u00adner table reg\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly like anoth\u00ader mem\u00adber of the fam\u00adi\u00adly, beam\u00ading at us through our lit\u00adtle black-and-white TV set.  Wal\u00adter Cronkite\u2026 with his reas\u00adsur\u00ading voice, lead\u00ading my fam\u00adi\u00adly and my friends\u2019 fam\u00adi\u00adlies and it seemed like the whole world through such trou\u00adbled times with his voice of hon\u00adesty, clar\u00adi\u00adty, and truth.  Wal\u00adter Cronkite!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And to think that, at that very moment, I had NO IDEA of what was to come\u2013of how Wal\u00adter Cronkite would car\u00adry our nation through the entire Apol\u00adlo space pro\u00adgram all the way to the era of the space shut\u00adtle\u2026 and of how his pas\u00adsion about space explo\u00adration would thrill the world, ignit\u00ading everyone\u2019s hearts with his \u201cGo baby, go!\u201d as Apol\u00adlo 11 lift\u00aded off!  And I could not pos\u00adsi\u00adbly fore\u00adsee that, in July 1969, I would sit with my fam\u00adi\u00adly, hov\u00ader\u00ading around the lit\u00adtle black-and-white TV set, all of us hold\u00ading our breaths\u2026 and that we would watch spell\u00adbound as Apol\u00adlo astro\u00adnaut Neil Arm\u00adstrong slow\u00adly descend\u00aded the lad\u00adder of the lunar mod\u00adule\u2026 and that we would lis\u00adten, speech\u00adless, chok\u00ading back tears of amaze\u00adment and pride, as Wal\u00adter Cronkite\u2019s stur\u00addy and patient voice would take us\u2013<\/em>all of human\u00adi\u00adty\u2013down that lad\u00adder along with Arm\u00adstrong, down that lad\u00adder to the sur\u00adface of the moon!<\/em> MANKIND\u2019S FIRST STEPS ON THE MOON, one of the most poignant moments and impor\u00adtant achieve\u00adments in all of his\u00adto\u00adry, nar\u00adrat\u00aded by the most mag\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcent, elo\u00adquent and yet hon\u00adest tour guide<\/em>\u2013my gosh, I had no idea that the best of Wal\u00adter Cronkite was yet to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I did know, though, stand\u00ading before my dad on that infa\u00admous night before my vocab\u00adu\u00adlary test, was that my dad nailed it.  He nailed \u2018integri\u00adty\u2019 with his answer.  And, the next day, I nailed \u2018integri\u00adty\u2019 on the test!  I got it!  I used it, in con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion in front of the class!  And, I real\u00adly knew<\/em> it.  In fact, it was a sur\u00adprise to me that I\u2019d prob\u00ada\u00adbly known the word all along\u2013it had been right in front of me.  I just hadn\u2019t rec\u00adog\u00adnized it, the sound of it, the voice<\/em> of it, night\u00adly, on the CBS Evening News!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To Mr. Cronkite,
as the world hon\u00adors you and mourns the recent pass\u00ading of your life,
I salute you.
I thank you for your steadi\u00adness, your ethics and untir\u00ading ser\u00advice to human\u00adi\u00adty,
and espe\u00adcial\u00adly for your exu\u00adber\u00adance in the explo\u00adration of space.
To me, per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adly, you were always the fourth astro\u00adnaut
to go to the moon,
the fourth crew mem\u00adber of Apol\u00adlo 11.
